Home Decoration Pro; Automated Window Blinds?

Is the time right for automated blinds or curtains in your home or office?  It depends on your resources and desires, but there have been huge strides made through improved technology and manufacturing upgrades that have resulted in lower pricing and much improved products.  “Curtains and blind systems lend themselves easily to automation. The technology is well proven, simple, and more importantly, the price points have come down dramatically over recent years” says Samantha Shervill of Silent Gliss in the UK.  They are easily integrated into a C-Bus control system  (a complete household control system that’s integration compatible by computer) and even operational by smart phone app if desired.

At lower price points there are battery powered units and one or two battery powered blinds should be fine for smaller windows, but I highly recommend larger blind systems be hard wired instead of plug in or battery mode.  They’re more reliable, durable, discreet systems that are usually wired into the ceiling, which eliminates the possibility of a battery failure.  The hard wired designs are much more versatile, and powerful enough to operate as many shades as you want with as many custom programs as you need.

If you decide to take the leap after further investigation, extensive planning is necessary since there are so many different options:  how will the blinds will be controlled (in groups, individually, all together, combinations), material, textures and colors?  I’m assuming a household control system here, so if you don’t have one, then we’re back to simple battery powered systems for your blinds unless you’re planning a new home.  Installing a whole new system into an existing home is cost prohibitive because of the destruction and renovation necessary unless you’re already planning a bare bones project.  There are some instances where plug in or battery remote control systems make sense:  hard to reach windows, remote control, pre-programmed wall timers, no dangerous hanging cords (small children die every year from them).

Once the systems are installed you won’t be able to switch motors in most cases, so be sure you have the right control system, color and style desired.  Normally there will be plenty of colors and textures to choose from, and get samples before ordering your selections.  Directions need to be explicit when it comes to measuring windows for automated blinds and followed closely.  If you’re getting a wired in system,  get the directions to your electrician before you place your order and have him survey your wiring scheme.  Don’t get caught with an order that’s not even compatible with your wiring capacity and licensed electricians are required for wired installations.

Automated curtain and blinds systems are in a fast growth trend for modern homes, and for plenty of good reasons.  A complete wired in system is a big step, but with lots of thought and pre-planning it’s a great investment in added convenience, security, safety, insulation, efficiency and high décor value.  Automated blind systems can have warranties from one year up to a lifetime guarantee, so keep that in mind when weighing your options.  Don’t forget the value of customer service.  One company I reviewed even assigns a representative to each purchaser to help you through the installation, programming and operating phase.

Conversely, the wired in systems have almost no limits in convenience and value to the modern home.  So if you’re planning a new home, or a bare bones remodel I highly recommend considering this option if your budget can handle it.  There will be a day when up to date homes are expected to have wired in, computer controlled, curtain / blind systems.  How would you view the value and convenience of an automobile without power windows?  We haven’t always had them!

Battery Powered Shade & Remote

My opinion in regard to the battery powered blind?  I’m not sold on the value at present pricing (e.g., 24” x 36,” $301.21 on sale) unless there’s an issue of child safety or hard to reach smaller blinds.  If you have a physical challenge and can’t reach a window blind, or have a skylight that needs a blind system it’s going to be a great convenience.  The plug-in style would be better if it weren’t for unsightly power cords and outlet requirements. I did find a company that uses a compact 3 year battery which could be very worthwhile for lighter blind systems.  It’s illustrated in the professionally done informative video below along with various systems and options available.

Reading this short article about another specific company should be useful as well.  Don’t forget the decorative designs that go with a modern decor theme, no matter your style.  We have high value decor accents inside and out for the modern home at Silky Flower Store.

Home & Office Decor; Home Decoration Pro & Artificial Plants

If you’re planning to decorate your home or office you may be thinking of using plants to improve your surroundings.  That’s a great idea, as plants help create a peaceful and appealing atmosphere, but what are the best types of plants? Today’s artificial plants help to make this an even better (and easier) choice because of the realism and beauty they provide.  More good news is the maintenance and ongoing problems of keeping live plants are eliminated, not to mention their continual maintenance costs.

Other challenges you may not have considered when using live plants: Will there be enough available sunlight and fresh air? Will they survive through damaging stress if maintenance is interrupted for any reason?  You can be assured this won’t be a problem with artificial plants, often called silk plants or faux plants .  One more advantage you may not have pondered is eliminating any chance of an allergic reaction your friends or clients may have to pollens or fragrances.  It can be serious for some people, and you definitely don’t want to be providing the problem source.

Low Light = Dead Plants

You may be asking yourself “How can I be sure of the quality?”  First, look for a company that offers a money back guarantee on their artificial plants.  Don’t expect a company to pay for your return shipping if it’s not what you expected, but at least a reimbursement of your investment or replacement using a different variety if not happy.  If you’re still hesitant, you might consider ordering a small, inexpensive silk plant or several artificial flowers to help you decide the value of the plants you’re contemplating.  Besides, you can always mix artificial flowers in a bouquet of fresh flowers for more color and variety.

Silk plants are available in an abundance of varieties and here a few: large silk trees (for outdoor use), small and in between size artificial trees such as palms, ivies, laurel, ferns, grasses, artificial ficus plants of all kinds (woody plants), bamboo, yucca, hanging plants.  I could go on, but you get the idea.  Consider your present décor carefully, and don’t forget to accurately measure the area to be utilized when ordering a larger artificial plant.  Don’t crowd an area, rather give it some space and of course place it in an area where everyone can enjoy it!

Low light + Silk Plant = Constant Beauty

Be assured that if you purchase high quality artificial plants you won’t be disappointed, assuming you plan carefully.  The realism of today’s artificial plants is almost inconceivable with the custom work and technology that goes into the best brands.  Imagine taking a real live plant and stripping it down piece by piece, measuring it, photographing it, and then reprogramming it into a near perfect match using computer technology.  Today’s best replicas are often made from cotton, or a cotton / Rayon combination, not the old plastic flowers and plastic plants we used to find (unless you go to your local discount store).  Some of the bigger artificial trees even have real wood included for the limbs and trunk.  Those are the predominant reasons I’m convinced you will be elated with your choices if you’re careful and select high quality artificial plants from a reputable dealer.

Office Decor; Home Decoration Pro Presents An Inviting Dental Office

If you’ve ever been to the dentist (who hasn’t?) what’s your immediate reaction when you enter the office?  Do you feel nervous, or hesitant about being there?  If you’re like me, you just want to get it done and get out of there and not have to come back for a LONG time.  Well after the dental procedure you may still feel that way, but at least things could likely seem a whole lot better with the proper atmosphere and decorating ideas.  For instance, would you rather feel like you’ve just entered the operating room of a hospital, or a relaxed family atmosphere?  Certainly some office “waiting rooms” are relatively small, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be cheerful and homey.

Dr. Drabik & Wife Kris in Inviting Office

Put your patients at ease in the office entry, waiting room, hallway, and dental chair with a relaxing theme.  Your customers will be much more at ease with a home feeling versus a sterile hospital atmosphere.  A great example of a relaxing environment for clients is illustrated here using decor accessories with a rustic Adirondack theme.  The adjacent picture shows open shelves for toys in a corner for the younger children, and family style seating.  The furniture should of course be comfortable, but follow your theme and don’t forget to add it to the personnel side of the counter as well.  If you’d like to see more of what Dr. Drabik did with their office be sure to take a look and learn more about additional comforting details.  After all, you do want your patients to come back don’t you?

Note the relaxing colors in Dr. Drabik’s office as it’s always important to use neutral colors which are much more comforting than brights, whites, and blacks.  Again, you want the home environment or even home party atmosphere, not the surgical “get them in and get them out” feeling.  Of course being friendly, courteous and attentive to your patient’s needs at all times is a big part of this whole concept, so don’t forget the details.  It can be the devil in the details, or the angel in the details.  Which would you prefer if you were the patient?

An additional enhancement is adding life and greenery to your decorating ideas, even if it’s just one item it can make a real difference.  Fish tanks (be ready for maintenance duty) will create special interest for children and adults alike.  Another enrichment is live plants (maintenance duty), silk flowers (low maintenance), or silk plants (occasional dusting),  or  silk flower arrangements, but be sure you have office or maintenance personnel willing to keep up diligently with any choices involving the required preservation.  The last thing you want is a local resident going belly up in the fish tank, or a plant that’s not looking so good (ok, so who’s the next patient?).  I think you get the idea.

Also, you’re going to need some appropriate art for the walls and of course photos, paintings, prints, etc. work well if you stay with the theme.  Here’s one that’s a fun one that gets an important point across to young patients and they won’t forget the point when they see this framed print .

Don’t forget that softly played music can help set the tone, but don’t choose hard rock or many of your patients will complain at best, or never be back at the worst.  Many patients like to talk among themselves in the office, but if the music is too loud or annoying it’s going to detract from rather than enhance the environment. The main point is to very carefully choose peaceful enhancing mood  music at a very low volume and realize many of your patients may have hearing problems.  Background “noise” can be very irritating when trying to communicate for those who are hearing impaired.

Of course fragrance of the office is also important, but be very careful here as some patients can not even tolerate perfumes being used by personnel.  What we recommend and can really add to the “home” environment scene are naturally home made potpourri, or on site brewing of natural  fragrances.  It can be fun, and different each week.  Changing the recipe more often than this tend to turn into work and is really not necessary, as the fragrance can easily last this long with most natural ingredients.  Keep in mind it doesn’t need nor should it be a strong fragrance, but subtle and pleasant to the senses.

Natural & Safe Potpourri

Personally I love the smell of vanilla and cinnamon (what’s for dessert?), but let your imagination do the designing, or you can go here for a short lesson.  One word of caution if you’re going to be using an energy using small appliance for simmering.  It could be like the coffee pot left turned on empty overnight that burns down the house.  Be sure to include safeguards that will prevent this tragic possibility, such as an automatic shut off timer.  You don’t need to leave these items on long to get the fragrance in the air anyway, so play it safe.

If you have special recipes of your own, please don’t hesitate to share them with us and help spread the good will.
